Vladimir Putin was born in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), Russia, on October 7, 1952. He grew up in a communal apartment and his father was a factory foreman. Putin graduated from Leningrad State University in 1975 with a law degree and joined the KGB, the Soviet Union's security agency. He worked for the KGB for nearly two decades, including stints in East Germany and Russia's second largest city, St. Petersburg.
In 1991, Putin entered politics and quickly rose through the ranks. He served as the head of the Federal Security Service (FSB), the KGB's successor agency, and then as the prime minister under President Boris Yeltsin. In 1999, Yeltsin resigned and Putin became acting president. He was later elected president in his own right in 2000.
As president, Putin has taken a strong stance against terrorism and has worked to strengthen the Russian state. He has also sought to assert Russia's influence on the international stage and has been involved in conflicts in places like Georgia, Ukraine, and Syria.
